FCSS News
The GHSA FCSS Program Representatives, the FCSS Sub-Committee and the Social Justice Committee organized a fundraiser to help those in need this past semester.
In July 2010, Pakistan experienced heavy monsoon rains which lead to flooding and the worst natural disaster in the history of Pakistan, according to the Canadian Red Cross. Approximately 20 million people were affected and the death toll was close to 2,000 people. This natural disaster caused thousands of individuals to lose their homes and caused a number of individuals to suffer from diseases due to lack of clean water and sanitation.
The FCSS students wanted to help as much as they could by donating money throughout the entire month of October. Donations were collected weekly in FCSS core classes and the FCSS program is happy to announce that students raised $175.00 for the cause. The money raised was donated to the Canadian Red Cross who projected that $150.00 could help provide 200,000 litres of clean drinking water.
“The GHSA and the FCSS Sub-Committee members as well as the SJC not only believe in helping out their own community but helping those who are experiencing hardships around the world. We are all greatly impacted when such devastation occurs and want others to know we are here to help,” said Brittany Maguire, FCSS Program Representative with the GHSA.
Relief efforts continue in Pakistan today and every donation can help. For more information or to donate to the cause, please go to www.redcross.ca.
The GHSA FCSS Program Representatives, the FCSS Sub-Committee and the Social Justice Committee have a lot of events planned for students this upcoming semester. Some of the events students can look forward to include; A fundraiser to collect mittens, gloves, scarves and hats taking place the month of February, movie night taking place after midterms, a volunteer trip to the North York Harvest Food Bank in mid March and a number of guest speakers taking place throughout the semester.
